How are artifact reports used?

I have to admit, I'm reluctant to mark artifacts; particularly ones all all four frames - it is cumbersome, and I don't know if those reports are actually useful. Could someone help me by explaining the useful purposes of the artifact reports?

In discussions that we've had with folks like TopCoder and other competition groups, being able to have "ignore things like this" data can greatly aid the development of the algorithms. So, one of the outcomes of AsteroidZoo is a body of data that will help machine learning algorithms by teaching them things to specifically ignore.
