Asteroid Zoo Talk

artefacts...

I know we're marking them, but I've had 20 plus in one frame set - what happens to this info? How is it used, please? This is Asteroid Zoo, not artefact zoo!

The word artifact as actually a bit poorly chosen for Asteroidzoo. The word has many meanings but for here it would best translate as "anything you think is not an asteroid".

So it can be lens reflections, a digital error, a FMO (Fast Moving Object), blobs (white or black), and so on.

They are marked for multiple reasons:

    • to help the automated system. We humans can see the difference between an artifact or (candidate) asteroid rather easily. Software on the other hand is not that good to see that difference, giving way more candidate asteroids. This way they can mix the automated detection and our detection and rule out things way more easily.
    • discovery of something new. Maybe there is something out there that is no asteroid but something else.
    • trend setting. There can be other interesting info coming out of artifacts. For example a sudden burst in cosmic rays in a range of sets.

And there will be more reasons. And for now indeed it's a lot of work to mark all the artifacts. Really hope they will make it easier to mark them in near future.
