  How can we determine whether it is already known or not

  If it is a known asteroid, the tool tells you when you click done. One the the requested enhancements is to have that information also displayed on the chat page of each object, but that is still just a request. Some users like to copy and paste the information from the summary page to the chat page when they get a known asteroid to label it as such, along with the name given. If someone has not done that, at the moment there is no other location with that information displayed on this site.
